Federal Geographic Information Center and Emirates Scholar Explore the Use of Geospatial Data to Support Sustainable Development

Abu Dhabi – February 2026

The Federal Geographic Information Center, in the presence of H.E. Eng. Hamed Al Kaabi, Director General, welcomed a delegation from Emirates Scholar Center for Research and Studies. The delegation included Dr. Fawaz Habbal, Director-General of the Center and Board of Trustees Member, along with several department directors. The visit aimed to explore ways to enhance mutual cooperation and unify efforts in scientific research, geospatial information, and data-driven innovation, in support of national priorities and the advancement of the country’s knowledge ecosystem.

During the meeting, both parties discussed opportunities to build a strategic partnership based on the integration of scientific research and geospatial data. This collaboration would pave the way for launching applied research initiatives, developing specialized studies, and creating joint scientific programs that support decision-making and accelerate digital transformation, reinforcing the optimal use of geospatial information across vital sectors.

H.E. Eng. Hamed Al Kaabi stated: “This collaboration represents a real opportunity to empower researchers and utilize available data to build scientific research projects in the geospatial field, supporting innovation and serving vital sectors.”

Dr. Fawaz Habbal added: “The next phase requires expanding data-driven scientific research and linking research outputs to development needs, contributing to the production of robust studies and strengthening the role of scientific research in supporting national policies and decision-making”.

Both parties affirmed that this cooperation will contribute to expanding the horizons of scientific research in geospatial information and developing specialized research content that supports the growth of Emirati talent and strengthens national policies in managing and utilizing geographic data. This will be achieved through an initial roadmap that includes knowledge exchange, joint research studies, workshops and training programs, and support for applied research projects serving government and development sectors. This reflects a shared belief that scientific research based on accurate data and advanced technologies is a fundamental pillar of sustainable development and informed decision-making.

At the end of the meeting, both parties exchanged trophies as a gesture of mutual appreciation for their efforts in supporting scientific research and enhancing geospatial data integration, reaffirming the importance of this collaboration in advancing the national knowledge ecosystem and supporting sustainable development goals, while reinforcing the UAE’s position as a leading hub for data-driven innovation.
