“The Idea of a 'Spiritual Power', and its Role in Shaping Values in the thought of Socratic Philosophers (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle), and its Continuation through the concept of ‘Imamate’ in Ikhwan us Safa”
المستخلص
This research paper will explore the influence of a 'spiritual power' in the development of ethical and aesthetic values within Socratic philosophy, and will trace its philosophical continuation through the concept of ‘Imamate’ as reflected in the writings of the Ikhwan us Safa (Brethren of Purity). In examining Socratic ethics and aesthetics, modern studies tend to underemphasize the role of a spiritual power or divine influence, focusing instead on more secular interpretations of Socratic thought. The paper will highlight how this neglect results in a partial interpretation of Socratic values, which traditionally included significant elements of divine inspiration and guidance. By examining the Ikhwan us Safa's epistles, the paper will illustrate the persistence and evolution of these values within the Islamic tradition, emphasizing the spiritual and divine aspects that guide human conduct and appreciation of beauty. It will also urge a more holistic approach to studying Socratic ethics and aesthetics, one that acknowledges the foundational role of a spiritual power in shaping these philosophical domains. By addressing these gaps, the paper aims to provide a more nuanced understanding of the philosophical and theological continuities between Socratic and Islamic thought, enriching contemporary interpretations of both traditions.
