Understanding Auditory Processing in Autism: From Sensory Challenges to Listening Skills Development

Many individuals on the autism spectrum face sensory challenges, particularly related to auditory processing. In this session at the International Autism Conference, Alan will delve into how differences in listening, active listening, and overall listening skills can affect speech, attention, and behavior in autistic individuals. The discussion will also explore how sound influences other sensory systems, including the vestibular system, proprioception, interoception, and how these are linked to balance, motor coordination, and even continence. You’ll gain insights into sensory-driven behaviors commonly associated with autism and discover practical strategies to enhance auditory and sensory processing in everyday life. The workshop will also introduce and explain The Listening Program® as a powerful tool to support listening, speech, attention, and broader sensory integration.
