Abstract

Contrary to common belief, children with ASD often require physiotherapy due to challenges in gross motor skills and functional movement. Recent studies highlight that gross motor delay is a prevalent feature among many people with autism, yet access to physiotherapeutic care remains very limited—with only 1.43% of autistic children in Australia receiving such treatment.

This presentation sheds light on how both gross motor skills and fine motor skills are frequently affected in children with ASD symptoms, impacting daily function and participation. We will explore evidence-based gross motor skills activities, gross motor activities, and fine motor skills activities that support development and independence. By reviewing case studies, attendees will gain a clearer understanding of physiotherapeutic indications, approaches, and how targeted interventions can help enhance motor performance and overall quality of life for children on the autism spectrum.
