Assistive Technology within Community Based Inclusive Development (CBID) Concept: AHS Solutions & Challenges

Abstract

The Al-Hussein Society (AHS) is a non-governmental organization working in the field of disabilities by providing inclusive rehab services and training for persons with disabilities, their caregivers, university students and field workers applying internationally accredited standards. AHS focuses on community-based inclusive development and assistive technology can accelerate the promotion of the inclusion of PWDs in society, the main role of AHS in CBID is to promote, support, train and implement modifications and facilitations using assistive technology tools including (mobility aid modifications, environmental modification) allow for greater inclusion in the community with portable units designed to meet the accessibility needs of the person. Examples of these devices include wheelchairs, walkers, van lifts, and adaptive beds. Assistive technologies include any item, piece of equipment or product used to increase, maintain or improve the functional capabilities of people with disabilities.1 Assistive technologies include low-vision devices, hearing aids, augmentative and alternative communication systems, walking frames, wheelchairs and prostheses such as artificial legs. Assistive technology is an umbrella term for any device or system that helps people with disabilities to perform everyday tasks. Low tech assistive technology is a type of assistive technology that does not require complex mechanisms or electronics. It is typically affordable and easy to use, making it accessible to a wide range of users. Low tech assistive technology is often less expensive, more durable, and easier to maintain than high tech devices.” These advantages make low tech assistive technology ideal for those who may not be able to afford more expensive high-tech alternatives. Additionally, low tech assistive technology is often more comfortable and intuitive to use, making it a great solution for those who are new to using assistive technology. Through this paper, number LOW assistive Technology Solutions that can fill in the gap of the market and meet the needs of persons with disabilities in an affordable manner. These solutions are local produced at the Mobility Aids and Adaptation Unit of AHS run by a person with disabilities.
