Abstract

Multiple zoonotic subtypes of avian influenza viruses (AIV) are endemic in poultry populations across South and Southeast Asia. With most poultry being traded alive, live bird markets play a central role in the epidemiology of avian flu in these regions. This environment facilitates conditions that support influenza A transmission between birds and potentially to humans, increasing the risk of a future avian influenza pandemic.

In this presentation, I will demonstrate how interdisciplinary research—combining epidemiological, ethnographic, and virological studies—can help assess the influence of poultry trading practices on zoonotic disease transmission dynamics. This integrated approach can also help identify critical control points to limit the spread of the bird influenza virus and improve regional public health preparedness.
