Abstract
Their Misbehavior or Ours? Rethinking Sensory and Auditory Challenges in Autism
Many individuals with autism face complex auditory and sensory processing difficulties that are often misunderstood as misbehavior. This insightful session explores how differences in listening, speech, and attention can be rooted in neurological sensory overload rather than intentional defiance. Alan will explain the foundations of auditory processing, its connection to brain function, and how sound can help regulate hypersensitivities. The workshop will also address how auditory input affects other systems like interoception, proprioception, and the vestibular system—impacting movement, balance, and even continence. Participants will gain tools to better interpret and respond to behaviors linked to autism, ADHD (including a clear explanation of ADHD meaning), and other neurodiverse profiles. A special focus will be given to The Listening Program, a powerful intervention designed to support sensory integration, improve listening abilities, and enhance speech and attention in daily life.
